Six easy dental New Year’s Resolutions

New year dental resolutions to keep your teeth strong and healthy

New year, new you? Nah, we like the old you! But there are a few tricks you can bring into your everyday life that we guarantee will keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong into 2019 and beyond.

We’ve put our collective brains together and come up with 6 easy, cost effective resolutions that you can start doing today.  Give them a try and let us know how you get on.

  1. Drink more water

Yes, that’s it. Just drink more water! It’s cost-effective and simple.

Water is your friend, cherish it, nourish it and most of all, drink it! It’s great for your overall health and, best of all, if you drink water after meals and sugary drinks it washes away the pesky bugs that can cause tooth decay.

Bonus tip: avoid adding lemon in your water as the acid from the lemon erodes your gums and tooth enamel. If you like lemon in your water, drink it through a straw so it avoids contact with your teeth.

  1. Say goodbye to soft drinks

Or maybe just a ‘I’ll see on a special occasions’.

This one is especially important for kids and young people who we see drinking fizzy drinks, fruit juices and sports drinks on a daily basis. The problem is the acid in soft drinks changes the pH level in your mouth and will, over a long time corrode the tooth enamel.

Unfortunately, when it comes to soft drinks there are no winners, even diet drinks are bad for teeth.  Sorry, it’s time to say ‘au revoir’.

  1. Floss

Repeat after us: I can it, I can do it, I can do it. Choose a time of day, slot it in your schedule and get familiar with your floss. Before you know it you’ll have a strict flossing routine that you can smugly tell your Dentist about on your next visit.

And anyway, how else are you going to get to the additional 40% of food debris that sits between your teeth after you’ve finished brushing?

Oh, and that rumour about flossing extending your life, it’s true.  So, go on, floss like a boss.

  1. Don’t put off getting dental treatment done

Ahhh, if we had a dollar for every patient who said ‘I wish I’d come in earlier’, we’d be buying our own private island in the Caribbean right now. We understand no one loves coming to see us (well, a few of you might cos we are fun) but avoiding much-needed dental treatment won’t make your problem disappear.

In our experience, the longer you leave it, the more painful it becomes and the more it costs to fix.

If you’re nervous about coming to see us we have lots of great solutions, including Dogtor Bruce our therapy dog, and sleep dentistry. Just don’t delay, we promise to look after you.

  1. Make time for regular professional cleans

Even if you’re best friends with your toothbrush it’s really important to keep up with regular professional cleans and check-ups.  Our hygiene A-team have the tools to reach into the nooks and crannies you can’t reach and remove stubborn stains to keep you sparkling.

Most importantly, a trip to your friendly Dentist gives us the opportunity to check on any changes in your mouth and catch little problems before they escalate.

  1. Smile

We saved the easiest and quickest resolution for last.

Did you know that even if you fake smile it releases chemicals that will trick your brain and actually make you feel better? There’s even research that shows people who have had botox are happier because they’re not able to frown as easily.

Whether you’re faking it or genuinely making it, a smile will always improve your day. Spread the happiness far and wide!

Over to you

We’d love to hear from you if you’re thinking of trying any of these tips in 2019. Our team are pretty good at smiling so we’ve decided to try and drink more water and avoid all soft drinks.
