Hi, Dr. Anand here from Dentelle by WDC.
If you wear dentures but find they move around too much, or you’re looking for a more stable alternative, then implant-supported dentures could just be your next upgrade.
With traditional dentures, you lose a lot of bite force. That means certain foods become harder to chew, and for many people, loose-fitting dentures can feel frustrating, especially if they slip when you are talking, laughing, or eating. This is especially true for lower dentures, which tend to be less stable than upper ones.
Now, the best alternative to dentures is implant-supported teeth, where the teeth are fixed in place and don’t need to be removed. But if that’s not an option, then implant-supported dentures is a great middle ground.
So how do they work? Well, instead of resting on your gums, implant-supported dentures clip onto the implants that are placed in your jaw, keeping them secure and stable. They won’t slip out while you eat or talk, and they offer a stronger bite than traditional dentures, although not as much as fixed implant-supported teeth.
Implant-supported dentures are particularly effective for lower dentures, since they can be stabilised with just two implants, keeping the costs significantly lower than a full fixed option. However, in the upper jaw, you still need at least four implants for support, which can sometimes make the cost comparable to an All-On-4 treatment.
Having said that, in cases of severe bone loss or a higher smile line, an upper implant-supported denture can give better aesthetics than a fixed All-On-4 solution.
A common approach for many patients is having a regular upper denture combined with an implant-supported lower denture. This gives more stability where it’s needed while keeping costs down.
So, if you are currently using dentures, are in the Gippsland area, and are looking for a more stable alternative, we would love to take care of you here at Dentelle by WDC.
