It turns out Dr Fernandez (Gerald to you and me) tapped into his inner Dentist at a very young age. As a child, he went to the dentist, saw a picture that showed gum disease, and declared, “I think my mum has gum disease!”. And his dentist told him he was right! In hindsight, he admits it might have been a white lie but it doesn’t matter because now Gerald is a Dentist – and a fabulous one at that.
When it comes to working in the city or the country, Gerald is clear on the matter “I worked in the country for 4 years followed by a brief stint in Melbourne. I’ve decided that the country is the ideal place for me to work”.
Gerald graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He also holds a graduate diploma in Clear Aligners from the University of Bolton in London and has completed additional training in crown and bridge work, surgical extractions and aesthetic dentistry. Gerald’s favourite area of interest is surgery and says he gets great satisfaction helping patients with a tricky tooth extraction.
Patients are at the heart of Gerald’s love for his job. He says, “I’m naturally a very empathetic person and always practice in a non-judgemental way. I always explain what I am about to do to my patients (if they’re happy to know) and check to see if they’re feeling comfortable. I understand that the dentist is not the most desirable place to be but I try my best to make it as comfortable as it can possibly be.”
Outside of work, you’ll find Gerald at the gym or going for runs to keep fit. He likes to hang out with his friends and family, or watch tennis and cricket. He’s also keen to start some new hobbies, so if you have any tips let him know!
