Everything you need to know about teeth whitening

How many times have you glanced at someone’s smile and thought ‘wow! I wish my teeth looked that white’? We all get a bit of tooth-envy every now and then, but did you know it’s easier than you think to have your own set of pearly-whites.

At Warragul Dental Care we offer a great range of teeth whitening options including our take-home package, the in-chair option (where the treatment is performed in the Practice) and our Platinum whitening package that promises your teeth will be the whitest they possibly can. But before you start your transformation to Hollywood A-lister smile, there are a few things we think you should know about teeth whitening. We’ve listed our top tips and advice below but, as always, if you have any questions you’re always welcome to give us a call or book a consultation.

How do I know if my teeth are suitable for teeth whitening?

Before undertaking any teeth whitening treatment you should come and see us to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. Teeth whitening gels are pretty powerful so we’ll check your teeth are strong enough to handle the treatment. If it’s applied to weak teeth or teeth with decay in them you can suffer from irreversible damage leaving you with costly remedial treatment.

You may think you don’t have any holes in your teeth, but just because you can’t see them or feel them doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Often holes form between the teeth or around old, worn out fillings. Only a dentist can find these, and if you’re looking for a good dentist we just happen to know where to find one.

What if I have fillings/crowns or veneers, can I still get my teeth whitened?

Teeth whitening will not change the colour of your fillings, crowns or veneers so be careful if you’re planning on using a teeth whitening product that isn’t administered by a dentist.

At Warragul Dental Care we check your teeth for any treatment you may have had in the past – we often find patients have forgotten about treatment they had a long time ago. We’ll let you know if any previous dental work will affect your teeth whitening and give you some options so all your teeth are beautiful and bright at the end of your treatment.

Should I get a professional clean before undergoing teeth whitening treatment?

Absolutely! Put it this way, would you apply fake tan to your skin if it was covered in mud or dirt? Of course not – who wants blotchy, unattractive tan lines!

It’s the same with your teeth. A professional clean with our hygienist will remove all the gunk and build-up and prepare your teeth to receive for maximum brightness from teeth whitening.

What about sensitivity? I’ve heard it can be painful

As the saying goes, no pain no gain right? We aren’t going to lie, tooth sensitivity is common and to be expected if you want to see results from your teeth whitening treatment. The great news is that the sensitivity will disappear once you complete the whitening treatment.

During your treatment we provide you with a de-sensitising paste. We also use a reputable, verified whitening gel with built in de-sensitisers approved by the Australian Therapy Goods Administration.

We’ll give you with a high quality de-sensitiser that can only be purchased from a reputable dentist to take home. This will help ease your sensitive teeth.

How white will my teeth get?

We get asked this so often. The truth is, everybody’s teeth whiten differently and it really comes down to which process works best for you, your lifestyle and how much time you have.

Teeth whitening is like sun tanning. Where some people simply step out into the sun and turn golden brown, some people have teeth that become super bright really quickly. For others, their teeth may take longer to brighten or may not brighten to the same extent.

We know that 95% of people have teeth that will change colour, but there’s no way anyone can predict how bright your teeth will be after treatment.

Our platinum package gives your teeth the best chance to get as bright as they can be. It includes 2 weeks of night-time home whitening and ends with an in-chair session to make your teeth as bright as possible – and all within 2 weeks.

What about the whitening products from the supermarket or online?

Teeth whitening is an investment in your smile and like all investments, we recommend you understand your options, seek professional advice, and feel comfortable with the practitioner performing your procedure.

We advise you to be wary of products you buy online. They may be inappropriate for your mouth, be fake products, or not produced to Australian standards. Some products may contain ingredients that do not work at all or, worse still, ingredients that do irreversible damage to your teeth, gums, cheeks and lips.

At Warragul Dental Care we only use the best dental grade products – they always meet the approved TGA guidelines and can only be administered by dental professionals. More importantly, you get our decades of experience and expert guidance throughout your treatment.
